How does watching the film version of Into the Wild change or deepen your understanding of Chris McCandless compared to reading the book? In your response, explain one key difference in how his character or experiences are presented, and connect this to a time when seeing something visually changed your understanding of a situation.

The movie provides more detail without actually giving us more details being said. We can SEE details in the movie that the book may not provide us. Furthermore, the movie can be more brief in terms of description, because we don't need to be told what a person looks like when they are right in front of our eyes. Today we watched more of the Into the Wild movie. I love watching the movie because it lets me better picture what happens in the book instead of just going off guesses.

Chris and his sister Carine McCandless had a very close relationship, even when he struggled to connect with others. Write about a relationship in your life where you feel truly understood. Explain what makes that relationship strong and how it compares to the connection between Chris and Carine in Into the Wild.

Me and my dad have a very understanding relationship. We spend a lot of time around each other, and are always working on some sort of project. We understand each other's strengths and weaknesses, and always help out whenever there's an issue. He knows everything about me, and understands who I am.  Today we read chapter 13 of Into the Wild. We answered some questions on it as well. I liked that the work load was less today. It took some stress off, and really allowed me to focus on what I was reading.

Identify a time when you performed better than expected. What factors contributed to your success.

About a week ago, I shot a career best 37 (+1) on 9 holes. Which is insanely good for me (and for anyone in general). The factors that contributed were, calmness, stress free, and just not thinking too much about each shot. Then of course performing/executing the shots. Today we skip read chapter 12 of into the wild, and orally answered questions. I enjoyed the class today because of the oral aspect of it. I like working as a class, and communicating out loud.

Based on the first 40 minutes of the film and Chapters 1–11 of the book, does the visual version of Chris’s journey make his choices seem more justified or more reckless than the text does? Explain how the medium (film vs writing) shapes your perspective.

I think the movie makes his decisions more justified because we see how empty it is, and how NOBODY is ever around him, so he really only has 1 choice, and that's to trust them and hop in. In the writing, I don't visualize as many details as I see in the film. The film I can see tone, setting, and mood, while the book is more of a guessing game/imagination. Smaller details that wouldn't be included in the book, can be picked up in the movie. Today we watched the first 40 mins of Into the Wild and answered some comparison questions along the way. It was nice to finally be able to visualize Alex's journey. I loved watching the movie because it put a lot of pieces of the story together, and connected everything nicely. I look forward to finishing it!

Think about a moment when your understanding of your family changed as you got older. How did that shift impact your perspective, and how does that connect to Chris’s realization about his parents in Chapter 11?

One thing that I understood more about my family as I got older is our financial situation. We are a middle class, lower middle class family, but my parents still work hard, and do a lot to make me happy. It puts into perspective that they really do the most for me in hopes to be the man I become. It's quite the opposite of Alex's perspective of his parents, but we both realize something, and make decisions based off it. Today we read chapter 11 of into the wild, then answered some questions about influence, and growing up, on 2 pages of work. I got better at managing time today. I worked a little faster than normal, and got a good bit of work done in class before the bell rang.

Reflect on your reading of Into the Wild chapters 1–10. Which chapter stood out to you the most, and why? In your response, explain what specifically made this chapter meaningful, interesting, or impactful. You may consider elements such as McCandless’s actions, a key event, a theme, or Krakauer’s storytelling.

I really liked chapter 3 mostly because of Westerberg. I really liked the journey Alex took to reach Carthage, and the tasks he did in the town. As a reader, I kind of felt at home reading about the hospitality and people in carthage. Today we took the chapter 1-10 test on Into The Wild. I feel very solid about how I did. I didn't struggle on many questions, and kept a pretty steady pace.

Chris McCandless rejects a traditional path of success and instead defines success on his own terms through freedom, experience, and personal meaning. Reflect on what success means to you at your current stage in life. In the response, explain how success is currently defined (grades, college acceptance, achievements, happiness, etc.) and where those ideas come from. Then, consider whether that definition truly reflects personal values or if it is shaped by expectations from family, school, or society.

To me, success means to have multiple idyllic days in a week, and feel happy on the inside. I also feel most successful when I make my parents proud. I may get an achievement of some sort, or just do something kind. The definition is reflected by personal values, because that's what i believe success consists of. Today we read chapters 9 and 10 of Into the Wild, and did some work about the chapters. Creating connections, and picking out topics. I tried out the audio book today, and it increased my productivity, and reading pace.

Chris chooses independence over relationships. When have you chosen to be on your own instead of relying on others? What happened, and would you make the same choice again?

For me personally, I'm an introvert, so I make that choice a lot. Plenty of times I've just wanted to be by myself, even if my friends had plans. I would always make that choice again, because you don't have control of what others can do. You just trust them. I trust myself way more. Today we read more of into the wild. We created critical thinking questions based on what we read, and if they relate to experiences we've had before. I enjoyed reading, and got to listen to it as well.

Choose a vocabulary word from Lesson 10 that resonates with you personally. Write a blog post explaining why this word is significant to you, including any personal memories or experiences that link you to the word.

One vocab word that resonates with me is perambulate. It reminds me of taking a walk with my dog when I was younger before she passed. A smooth, steady pace, with perfect weather right before it got dark. Today it was vocab Monday, so we wrote our own sentences using the new words, and we answered some questions about them. I enjoyed the work today because it allowed us to be free in creating our own sentences, trying to learn the word.

For most of you, yesterday you took the SAT. If you did not, you will take it before you leave high school. What is your desired SAT score? Identify your top three colleges and explain why each school appeals to you.

For me, my desired SAT score is anything above a 1200. Of course, anything higher than that is great, but I know how smart I am, and I know my boundaries. My colleges of choice are WCU because of the campus, size, and majors. Another college is UNG. I've always liked that college, and enjoyed the campus. Finally, I would like to go to UGA. Which is unlikely, but It's always worth a try. My mom and brother went there. They have my desired major, and love the college. Today we read chapter 7 of Into the wild. We also took note of questions we had, what unfamiliar words we see, a prediction, made sketches, etc. I enjoyed the task we had while reading today. Gave a good bit of work to do while comprehending the book.

Twice a year we adjust our clocks for daylight saving time, but the change can affect our sleep, energy, and daily routines. Now that we have sprung forward; reflect on how this time change impacts you personally. Do you find it easy or difficult to adjust your schedule? Explain how the time change affects your mood, productivity, or daily habits.

At first, like the 1st week of the change, it is rough. It's harder to get proper sleep, and focus in school. But after the first week, it is perfect. I like spring forward more than fall back, because of the additional hour of daylight we get. It never really affects my mood or productivity. Today we read chapter 6 of Into the Wild, and we wrote down 3 facts, 2 interesting things, and 1 question. I'm comprehending this book well, which is good for me because I have struggled with reading comprehension in the past.

In Chapter 5 of Into the Wild, McCandless is strongly influenced by writers like Jack London, whose stories shape the way he thinks about adventure and wilderness. Has a book, song, musician, or artist ever influenced the way you think about life, goals, or the world around you? Identify the specific book, song, musician, or artist and explain how their ideas or message affected your thinking.

For me, Chris Stapleton has had an impact on the way I think about life. He is a phenomenal lyricist, and songwriter. One line that I think about a lot is, "Someday we'll look back and smile, and know it was worth every mile" in the song Starting Over. It has a big meaning, and a lasting influence on me. So I should cherish every moment, because I won't get these youth days anymore. Today we read chapter 5 of Into the wild, and answered some questions about it. Once again, this book I feel like is in a weird order... But it's growing on me, and I'm enjoying it.

In Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless gives up many of his possessions in pursuit of freedom and meaningful experiences. If you had to simplify your life and keep only a few important possessions, what would you keep and why? What would be hardest to leave behind?

I would keep my bed, for comfort, seating, and sleep. My phone, for entertainment, and staying in the loop. Golf clubs, for a hobby, and entertainment. Some weights, to stay active and strong. Finally, I would keep my car, for transportation. I would have to leave behind my fishing gear, which is very sad. But I already have golf on here, which is already a hobby so fishing had to go. Today we read chapters 2 & 3 in class, and answered questions along the way. We had to match themes, and explain the reasoning. This book is engaging and intriguing. Although, the format of how the story is told is a little weird, but we'll have to see how it plays out.

People sometimes feel the need to step away from their normal routines or environments in order to better understand themselves. Describe a time when you needed distance from a situation, place, or group of people in order to think more clearly or gain perspective. What did that experience teach you about yourself?

I felt the need to step away from something when I went to a party, and people started smoking. I'm not the type of guy to do that, so I declined, and didn't wanna get in any engagement whatsoever. Because I know what's right for me. Today we read the first chapter of Into the Wild, as well as the author's note. I'm intrigued by this book, and the end of the first chapter kind of leaves you on a cliffhanger. Then we answered questions about the 1st chapter. I liked reading the book in class today. So far, I'm having good reading comprehension on this book (which is not usually the case), so I can actually understand and follow the plot.

Intro to into the wild

I really like the look and sound of this book. I'm interested to see how it all pans out, but I think Alex is making a dumb choice. Today we had an introduction to the book that we're reading, by reading the front cover, examining the map, and doing the first part of the worksheet. I enjoyed answering the questions on the paper. The 12 things that we would take on a hike was engaging, and entertaining. I also liked it because I relate to it!

Today you worked on creating your Vocabulary Digital Cards in Adobe Express. In one well-developed paragraph, reflect on the assignment by explaining which vocabulary word was easiest for you to understand, which word was most challenging, and how creating your own sentence and selecting an image helped strengthen your understanding of the vocabulary. Use specific examples from your work.

For me, the easiest word to understand was culpable. I've already heard the word before, and it has a pretty simple meaning. One word I didn't really like or understand was toady. It was challenging to make a sentence using it. I really liked having to create a sentence because it gave me a better understanding for the word. And the picture helped as well. Today we made digital vocabulary cards on Adobe Express.  I liked the aspect of Adobe Express to use for our vocab. And it will all be in 1 place for the future.
