Write about a conversation that changed you.

I had a conversation with my mom one time, and she was telling me to just be myself. At the time, I was entering 7th grade, still figuring myself out. The conversation we had really changed how I view life. I wouldn't care what others thought of me, I would just be myself. Today we worked with finding evidence for our claims! We were given a worksheet where we had to right out supporting claim or opposing claim based on the prompt.  Today I got better at finding evidence and citing it.

Write about something that you believed as a child.

I believed in Santa when I was a child. There was a Santa tracker app which really made it believable for me. Today we wrote more vocab in our notebook. After that, we went onto google docs and created some examples using pictures of the vocab words. Then we had to explain how the picture was related to the word. Today I learned new vocab words. Now I need to start studying the first set of vocab from last week.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

I have overcome my fear of doing tricks off the diving board. I used to be scared to do a flip but now I can do a lot of fancy tricks. Today we talked about claims. We also got a worksheet that is about identifying claims. Claim of value, claim of fact and claim of policy. I learned better about claims and how to make them with evidence.

As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

Probably sports. There will be many debates about whose team will win, or whose team will win in fantasy. Or whenever we get to the age of sports betting. There will be many debates about sports when I'm older. Today we discussed more about arguments and ethos pathos logos. We determined if an example would be E P or L. Which was a fun interactive assignment. We also took notes on claims, and dove deeper into them. Today I got better at determining E P L, and learned more about claims.

Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

One truth I was afraid to accept was when my dog passed away. I didn't believe it but my parents already broke the news. I was in the 4th grade and it was my childhood dog. It was like losing my best friend. It was a very sad day and didn't want to accept it. Today we took notes on arguing. We also did some examples of using ethos pathos and logos. I learned more about the 3 rhetoric appeals and how to properly use them.

Write about a time when you were judged unfairly.

I was judged unfairly when I was racing with the sprinters in track, when I was a distance runner. I tried to keep up but I just got laughed at by the sprinters. It was unfair because sprinting isn't my event. Today Mr. Rease wasn't here, so we did a common lit and this blog post. I got better at reading comprehension because of the common lit.

Imagine you are learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the very first time. What would you be curious to know about the traditions, foods, music, or celebrations?

I would want to know about their whole culture. I would want to try their foods and see their celebrations and how they are different than our own. Today we did some more practice with clusters. We had the topic of "Overrated", and we had to put 5 things we thought were overrated. I got better at learning how to format and get ideas for what to write in my essay.

After viewing your classmates’ poem posters, select one presentation that caught your attention. Describe what you enjoyed about it or something new you learned from their work.

I really liked Davion's poem. it stuck out to me because of the format he created it in. It was pretty much a video, and his animated character was talking in the foreground, while new information would pop-up in the background. Today we presented our poems.  I feel like I did really well, and created a good poem with a good meaning and theme.

In “The Interlopers” by Saki, Ulrich and Georg view each other as interlopers, outsiders intruding on their land and their lives. Think about a time when you felt like an interloper or when someone else felt out of place in your world. How did that situation affect relationships, emotions, or outcomes?

There is a saying that goes around that is "If you aren't invited, don't ask to come". Even though it can be mean and disrupt friendships, it's the truth though. Because maybe someone that is going doesn't like you so they didn't invite you, but you still ask to come which can create a very awkward situation. I never really had an experience like that but I've heard of them happening a lot and changing relationships with people. Today Mr. Rease wasn't here, so we had to do a common lit assignment, and our blog post. Today was pretty easy and I didn't really learn anything, but got some good practice with reading comprehension which I need to work on.

Of today’s 15 vocabulary words, which three do you think you will use the most in your speaking and writing this semester? Explain why each word feels useful or powerful to you.

I would use adventitious because somethings people are non-essential. I would also use aesthetic because it has came somewhat used in the modern day. Finally, I would use amorphous because I could use it for describing something vague or broad. Today we made sentences in our own words using some new vocabulary. We also answered questions about them. Today I learned some new vocabulary. This will help me when I take the SAT because I will probably be seeing them in questions.

It’s Homecoming Week! 🎉 What do you love most about being part of the Lakeside community? How do you show off your school spirit? What is your favorite Homecoming tradition or event?

I like that homecoming week gets people excited. And students actually having some fun in school. I show school spirit whenever I can. If I have something that represents the theme, I'll wear it. I try my best. I really enjoy the pep-rally's in school because they are cool to see, and exciting. Today we took a 20 question quiz on the poem, "Constantly Risking Absurdity". I did very well on the quiz, but I don't think I would've done as well if I didn't have my annotations on the poem.

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on actvities. Select one and tell why.

I enjoy class discussions the most because sometimes its funny, sometimes it helps me or other students learn, and its overall not too boring. I wasn't here today because I wasn't feeling well, but I see that we had to make a poem poster. I got better at using Adobe and generating a character.

Which aspect of creating a poem do you enjoy the most? Tell what it is and explain why.

I'm not sure why, but I like creating lines that don't really make that much sense. But it makes people think about what I'm trying to say. Today we created our own poems based on a rubric. I learned what to include in my poem, and how to make it make sense too.

After reading Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "Constantly Risking Absurdity," which explores the poet's daring craft, write about your most absurd personal experience. Describe a single, specific incident that felt ridiculously bold or foolish. Ensure your response is vivid, concise, and captures the essence of absurdity.

One absurd moment was when I decided to dive off the top of a boat. Which was like a 25 foot drop. It was very dumb, but a cool experience. Plus, I didn't get a TRUE understanding of how deep the water was. When I went down to check the depth, I only went down like 8 feet, then stopped. Today we analyzed a poem and watched an acrobat do some absurd task. I learned and thought about what absurd activities there really are in the world. I would never attempt to walk over the grand canyon.

You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?

I would say "Take it Easy" by the Eagles. I think this represents my life right now because I try to go slow, and enjoy life. I'm starting to do more simple and little things in life that I didn't really appreciate a while ago. Relaxing, not procrastinating, being happy, sitting outside, going fishing, and spending time with family. Today we started the 5 song soundtrack assignment, then took our test. I don't feel good at all about the test because there were a lot of things I didn't know. Plus we didn't have much time to take it, so I didn't even end up finishing...

If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

I would choose to compose a poem about how I love being outdoors and exploring. My life's message would be to just go outside. Even If you're not a big "outdoors" person, just sitting outside in your backyard  and never stop exploring and adventuring. Today we analyzed more of Emily Dickinson's poems and also annotated them. I also had to finish up the heart assignment from Tuesday. Each day we analyze new poems, I feel like i'm slowly getting better at it. I also learned some new, valuable life lessons.

You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

I've enjoyed the class thoroughly so far. I really like how you walk through everything and make sure we understand. I've also enjoyed not having homework. Today we DEEPLY analyzed a poem by Emily Dickinson. Then we started to color a heart that was divided about what to do. I learned how to find definitions and really think about what they mean and what version of the word is being used.
